A new scheme has been launched to improve the cleaning standards of hospitals across Northern Ireland.
The Back to Basics initiative will be piloted in four wards to help raise hygiene standards and prevent infection, reports One Complete Solution
The scheme, which is backed by the Northern Ireland Executive health minister Michael McGimpsey, may subsequently be rolled out in other hospitals across the country if the pilot proves to be a success.
Cleaning agencies will be advised to devote meticulous attention to the cleaning of surfaces and hospital equipment to ensure a thorough and comprehensive clean.
Mr McGimpsey said measures designed to drastically improve the cleaning and hygiene standards of hospitals are already underway.
"Last year I announced a major £9 million investment aimed at fighting 'superbugs' such as MRSA and improving cleanliness," he commented. "This included initiatives such as unannounced hygiene inspections."
The initiatives introduced last year include additional funding to set up rapid response cleaning teams at all hospitals and the launch of a regional hand hygiene campaign to encourage all health care staff and visitors to wash their hands.
